This week’s “Romantic Pick” comes from one of the most highly anticipated K-Dramas on air at the moment: “Sh**ting Stars“! After premiering to an incredibly positive response from viewers all over the world, “Sh**ting Stars” is setting even higher expectations for the upcoming episodes, especially with how endearing the first two were.
Starring Lee SungKyoung as Oh HanByeol, Head of PR at Starforce Entertainment, and Kim YoungDae as Gong TaeSeong, a top star with an angelic appearance but fiery personality, “Sh**ting Stars” tells the story of their push and pull relationship through romance, comedy and everything in between.
In the latest episode of “Sh**ting Stars”, we see Gong TaeSeong return to South Korea earlier than expected, much to the dismay of Oh HanByeol. There is a clear tension between the two laced with a palpable sense of affection evident to everyone around them. However, on the surface, TaeSeong and HanByeol are always at each other’s necks.
It is implied that HanByeol was the one to send TaeSeong off to Africa for volunteer work, but the reason isn’t made clear. Back in Africa, TaeSeong spent day and night hoping for a phone call, message, or even a letter from HanByeol. Seething with anger at receiving none, TaeSeong is determined to get on HanByeol’s nerves once he returns. Needless to say, he accomplishes his mission.
When HanByeol suggests a project for TaeSeong, he blatantly refuses, leaving HanByeol to shoulder the blame. While HanByeol perceives this as trouble, TaeSeong secretly makes sure the higher-ups leave her alone. Later that night, TaeSeong stumbles upon the script for “The World of the Stars”, the drama HanByeol had suggested for him, and feels compelled to take a look. In reality, it had been planted by his manager Kang YooSung (played by Yoon JongHoon) to subliminally influence him.
Soon after, he messages HanByeol, asking her why she wanted him to take on “The World of the Stars”. Half-asleep, she answers, telling him that she was curious. Intrigued by her response, TaeSeong gives her a call to clarify. When asked what she was curious about, HanByeol drowsily replies by saying that while she could picture him in other roles, she was keener to see how he would play his character in “The World of the Stars”.
Annoyed at the late-night work conversation, HanByeol hangs up, leaving TaeSeong flustered. He glances over the synopsis of the drama, taken aback by how similar it was to “their” story. Motivated by a newfound desire to feed HanByeol’s curiosity, TaeSeong prepares to take on “The World of the Stars” with reaffirmed passion.
There might have been no visible display of romantic feelings or skinship in this scene but there’s something about the way TaeSeong cautiously approaches HanByeol and sincerely considers her words that makes our hearts flutter. There is deep love and sensitivity in this connection that is both admirable and rare, especially in the absence of an official relationship. The respect that both HanByeol and TaeSeong have for each other, regardless of how hostile they might seem, speaks volumes of their bond. These are soulmates waiting to reconcile, and we’re living for it!
